I drink occasionally. A glass of wine on special occasions. Also my dad usually offers me a beer whenever I watch a game/race with him. Even though I usually turn it down.

Yes, a little glass of wine or two with good food is always appreciated. The fun experience is to share the mix of tastes with everyone on the table. It's great, I love it.

Also... I guess I'm Italian so it kind of doesn't help that I have sophisticated tastes.

Yes, But not wine or beer. I don't like the taste. I like some mixed drinks like Whiskey Sours, Midori Sours, Margaritas, and even straight Baileys on the Rocks.

Cognac is best experienced, no doubt, but it's generally sweet and perfumy. It's a type of grape brandy, if that helps.

The specific flavors and aromas can vary wildly between different Cognacs. I swear I've detected a hint of toasted marshmallow when I tasted Hennessy XO. On the other hand, Courvoisier and Remy Martin are soapy and too flowery for my taste. Personally, I prefer the nutty earthiness of the Martell Cognacs. YMMV, of course.

That is an interesting description. I might have to try it, but the problem is, I don't know anyone that drinks it. What is the best way to have it in your opinion? Or is there only one way? (/me is novice when it comes to things of this nature)

It's meant to be sipped and savored. Serve it neat in a snifter or a tulip-shaped glass.

You know how sometimes in TV shows and movies, when some rich snooty guy is drinking brandy, he'll have the snifter cupped in his hand? That actually does serve a purpose; it's to gradually warm the brandy with your body temperature.

The problem with Cognac is that it can get pricey. I once had dinner at the Las Vegas' Wynn hotel, and I remember looking at the drink menu to see that they had Hennessy Elipse going for $1,200. Per glass. No thank you ma'am, but I ain't willing to pay that much for my vice.

Since you haven't tried it before, I'd recommend starting off with a "V.S.O.P." Cognac. In general, reasonably good quality yet still affordable. The next time you eat at a steakhouse or a fancy restaurant, take a look at the after dinner drinks; they should have a selection of Cognacs there. You can try a glass then, without paying retail price for the whole bottle. I like to have it after a good meal anyway.
