I saw this ( http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704211704575139252992675706.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_MIDDLENexttoWhatsNewsTop ) on Drudge this morning.
Sounds neat. No glasses required. I don't know how a chip can display images your left and right eye see separately.

Saw this last night, amazing thing. Proves to show that you don't need amazing and groundbreaking capabilities in technology to amaze the people.
AND YAY! BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY!

Some other news and opinions:
Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.
We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.
"I don't understand the technology behind a 3D display that doesn't require glasses. If it's so easy to do, why would Samsung put out 3D HDTVs that require glasses? My guess is that Nintendo has figured something out that is either very cool and advanced, or is a gimmick, and until I see it, I really won't know. What's interesting to me is that Nintendo is so bold. It seems that if 3D on portable devices was easy, Apple would have beat them to it. If they truly pioneer a technology, my guess is that Apple will mimic the technology. Without a real breakthrough in game play (as happened with the DS), I'm not sure that this device will do much more than serve as a replacement for current DS owners." - Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter
The following information comes from multiple sources...
Nikkei
- control stick instead of dpad
- rumble/force-feedback
- improved wireless speed and battery life
- accelerometer
- screen that is smaller than 4 inches
- timing on the announcement could be related to decreased software releases
- Nikkei expects release in second half of 2010
Yomiuri Shimbun
- "it is believed that the system will use a Sharp 3D LCD panel."
- this 3d tech is acheived by placing a small film on the screen, which is separated by a small space. The slight differences in the image creates the 3d effect
Mainichi Shimbun
- software developers have been briefed on the system
- third party software at launch
My opinions:
I think this could end up being really cool, I just hope it is not too much money and launches with the 5th gen Pokemon games and some sort of Smash Bros DS as well.

Re: New Nintendo Handheld Announced: Nintendo 3DS
Yeah Im with Pachter on this one... but if they really could do some new cool things that would be great... also I read somewhere that it is to have 2 screens like the DS but you can somehow connect them better to form one screen if needed... don´t know if there anything to that information... also graphics are supposed to match the gamecube witch would be nice...
if this is going to be a DS-HD without a completely new concept (I don´t think 3D counts as that) the I guess its a pretty save bet the Wii will get a similar treatment within the next few years with better graphics and integrated motion plus... and maybe some other tweaks...

I believe i heard that the distance between the screens was so small that it could be used as a single screen if need be.

Re: New Nintendo Handheld Announced: Nintendo 3DS
New info
- Spoiler:
- You had the hard news for breakfast, so how's about some less official, but still pretty robust, fodder for brunch? Asahi in Japan offers the first word on how the 3DS achieves its 3D-ness by suggesting that the new portable game machine with feature a parallax barrier LCD from Sharp. The tech has apparently already been deployed in a few cellphones over there and is described as "unsuitable" for large-screen TVs. This is corroborated by Nikkei, which suggests that the screens on the new device will be smaller than 4 inches diagonally, placing it closer to the DSi than the 4.2-inch DSi XL / LL. Other news from the latter source include so-called 3D control stick(s), though it's not entirely clear whether this'll be anything massively new or just a pair of analog nubs for us to push around. Either way, Nintendo is said to have secured patents for the new control methodology in Japan late last year. The Nikkei article also mentions improvements in WiFi transfers and battery life, as well as a new vibration function. Now that we've got all that out of the way, can someone please tell us if this thing has Tegra inside or not?

I seem to have changed my mind, OMFGWTFBBQ I want it!
I really want to see what they do with it first, at least.

Dunno how if this is the right step for Nintendo, they are really taking a risk with this move. Personally I don't think we are ready for 3d.

Everything will not be 3D and I'm sure some games will not have 3D at all. Think of a DS with two screens that can act as one and with Gamecube graphics. You can't tell me you don't want that. We could be playing a Melee type Smash Bros game, that would be awesome.

Re: New Nintendo Handheld Announced: Nintendo 3DS
I actually just got done doing a lot of research on 3d TV's that do not require glasses and their are a ton coming out.
And to answer Michael Pachter samung is trying to make money now. The 3D tv without glasses are just starting to roll out and most have only 8 viewing angle but the technology is exploding with some having 64 viewing angles and other having head tracking technology so the viewing angle follows you.
I'm not sure how Micheal Pachter is so out of the loop.
