Metal Gear Solid 4 - Review
So I have done it I beat the greatest game, nay greatest narrative ever made period. Just kidding actually its just the greatest soap opera that targets young males, that’s right Metal Gear Solid. MGS is an interesting series that I believe helps prove how young and immature the video game industry really is. I mean MGS is to teen males as Twilight is to teen girls, yet the reviews of New Moon are universally bad. Why? Because movie reviewers are critics and not consumers. MGS4 is great for MGS, good for a video game and, horrible as anything that claims to be high art.
For some reason people in the video game industry think high production value = quality but in reality it just equals money spent and MGS4 has had some money spent on it. Don’t get me wrong MGS4 has lots of good qualities but its not this artistic high water mark. True past version have been technical and to an extent artistic high water marks. But today MGS is becoming a relic where other games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Uncharted have figured out how to integrate story and game play together more seamlessly, but MGS is stuck in the past.
Game play - the game play in MGS4 is great, its not the best shooter ever and the inventory management is probably more complex then it needs to be, but it works well. One of the high notes of the game is varied type of missions and fights you have, it make the game play very fun. Also I really don’t care about the history of MGS it is a problem if your game has more cinematic time then gaming time. Judging the game play alone which totals like 8 hours I would give it a good 9.5.
Graphics - the graphics are top notch and the animations are fluid, I don’t think anyone will have a problem with being emerged in the game. That said I do not believe for one second this game could “only be done on the PS3” On a side note I think snake should start doing ads for Marlboro cigarettes. My one complaint is that everything has this yellow dessert tint in the beginning including a jungle segment.
Storyline - If you are a huge fan of MGS Kojima reaches down your pants and plays with you. I mean old characters brought back, revisiting Shadow Moses, and driving a metal gear solid, there is a lot of fan service done in the game. On the side of reality it is as long and convoluted as ever and very much the definition of kitch.. I really wish they had added some rpg elements in the dialog this way those who want an explanation for everything can get it and those who don’t could just here the important overview.
Overall MGS4 is very hard to score because it is simultaneously fun and completely ridicules. If you can get into it you will have a blast even if half the time your controller will be next to you while you shake your head and roll your eyes. I think for what it is its fun and judging it within that spectrum is a pretty good game.

I played the game and all the ones before. I thought it was good, but not OMG THE BEST EVER that some people think.
Kojima simply talks too much. You could cut 3 hours worth of cutscens just repeating stuff said before. It would make the game more agile, and all the important scenes would be more efficient.
But good end for the Snake story.

just saw GI Joe and as a reference point this game is 30 times better then that movie. That movie was absolutely horrible.
