Yeah, she certainly gets more coverage than Joe Biden. But everyone (in the press) knows Joe Biden and there's nothing interesting to report. Biden has been making some great speeches and getting people excited about Obama. The mainstream media doesn't show Biden much and shows Palin every chance they get. After the Couric interview I think the slant of the coverage has turned somewhat against Palin.

The debate tonight should be her defining moment. Besides her speech at the convention (lipstick on a pitbull, lol) this should be her moment. In the end the VP must do no harm so one would expect a pretty tame debate. The McCain camp may think they can get another "convention" like bump if she throws a ton of red to the base so it may be fun to watch.

Truthfully even though I've watched most of them since Dole/Mondale the only two things I can remember is Bentsen's "You're no Jack Kennedy" and Stockdale's horrible performance. One perfect zinger and one absolute train wreck. The rest I completely forget. The Presidential debates I remember and some of them I remember very well.

No. Who was he debating?

Palin did just fine at hitting talking points and evading questions. Biden got a chance to show that he is presidential material. Overall Biden won but it didn't change the dynamics of the campaign as far as I can tell.

No major changes to the map today...other than Montana going from strong McCain to weak McCain.

I don't expect to see any poll changes due to any VP Debate bounce.

And as far as Bush's Bulge, Frank....it was in the first debate against Kerry in '04. It appeared he had something very large under his jacket. It even resulted in his Tailor being fired.

As of October 4th, 2008.

electoral vote.com - Page 2 Oct04

I'm only posting the graph today because it hasn't been updated on this page. There have been no changes to the vote count.

Obama: 338
McCain: 185
Ties: 15

Today's chart continues the trend noticed in the last chart....that the blue is getting bluer. Washington went from weak Obama to strong Obama...and New Hampshire jumped two positions to go from slightly Obama to strong Obama.

The votemaster at electoral vote has this to say today:

McCain Will Take the Gloves Off

The McCain campaign (read: Steve Schmidt) has decided that being a war hero is not good enough, being a POW is not good enough, being a maverick is not good enough, and being a reformer is not good enough, so the mud is about to start flying. The campaign has pulled all its positive ads touting McCain's experience and long service to the country. From now on, the entire focus will be on Barack Obama's associations with convicted Chicago developer Tony Rezko, 1960s radical William Ayers, and Obama's former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It is a high-risk gamble, but McCain loves to roll the dice. But this fierce new strategy has two potential downsides. First, while partisan Republicans will love it (as they loved Sarah Palin's convention speech), negative ads don't always work so well with independents, whose votes are now crucial to both sides. Second, there is a very real danger that either Obama, or more likely, Democratic 527s will start throwing mud right back at McCain. A few choice subjects for negative ads are (1) his taking bribes from convicted felon Charles Keating in the 1980s, (2) the fact that he is an old man who has had a very dangerous form of cancer four times, and (3) the way he divorced his crippled first wife to marry a beer heiress worth $100 million. Clearly Schmidt knows all this but apparently he feels he has to shake things up before it is too late. It is going to get real messy.

The 527s on both sides are already in the act, of course. Here is an example of an anti-Obama ad and an example of an anti-McCain ad.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just one month to go...but it's going to be one hell of a month.

I won't post the day's chart...but I will say that Colorado went from slightly Obama to slightly McCain.

I'll also present this graph from a website called openleft.com.

electoral vote.com - Page 2 2912843186_fa3d02aeb5

As well as a commentary from the votemaster there:

Today is the first time Barack Obama has reached or surpassed the 50-point mark, also. The lead is a record 8.25 points, also. McCain is also at his all-time low at 42 points, too.

As I "argued" yesterday, McCain's campaign has the look of a sinking ship. Many countered with caution. We've seen Obama take leads before and then give them up. And many of us bear the emotional scars of 2000 and 2004 and have been unwilling to get excited too early. But:

1. Gore or Kerry never had a lead like this. And certainly they never had a sustained and sizable lead like this.

2. It's October. The post-convention period is exactly when moves like this by one candidate or the other usually take place. Waffling voters are now choosing sides.

Don't you think a more non partisian poll might have more value then a site thats title is "openleft"

http://www.gallup.com/poll/election2008.aspx

Now the numbers are rather close but I still prefer to get my polls from someone who isn't looking through bear goggles or donkey goggles or elephant goggles.

FYI almost all your history books to this day use the gallup polls.
