Well I’m not sure anyone has been waiting to read this but I have been waiting to write this. Ghostbusters: The Video Game review. Alright lets start with the ghostbusterness of the game. Is it like the movies? No and Yes.

No in that arguably the biggest star of Ghostbusters Bill Murray phoned in is voice acting. Seriously it sounds like he is doing an impersonation of himself and I swear there are no tonal inflection with his character even when things are exploding. This is sad because entire movies, good movies have been built around Murray before where as much as I love the other actors they usually end up in side rolls.

Yes in that the rest of the cast hit home runs being their characters and funny. I would dare to say dialog wise everyone but Murray is much funnier and entertaining then in the movies. Also yes in that the story feels like a true sequel . Once you are done you will feel like you watched the 3rd movie.

Now the way the story is setup is that you’re a new recruit to the Ghostbusters and are going to be used for testing out Egons new experimental equipment. Your character never talks which is probably good this way you can just spectate the others as they put on the show and you do the work. That said it would have been easy the way they have the story setup to allow you to play any Ghostbusters you want, but as it is fine too.

Presentation wise the game looks good but not great with some very horrible facial animation in game. So bad I would say sometimes it start to break the experience. The environments are varied with the more realistic settings tending to be more blah and the supernatural ones looking awesome. But you can decorate it yourself by spraying slime or just blasting your proton pack.

The game plays like a 3rd person shooter and the controls are great, if maybe just little bit complex. But once you wrap your head around what buttons do what you’ll have no problem busting ghost. I could explain exactly how it works but I’m pretty sure everyone remembers from the movie how to trap a ghost, though there are a few more methods introduced in the game but most likely you will just stick to your proton pack. Also all your “weapons” have upgrades you can buy with money earned from trapping ghost. My only complaint with the game play is some parts can be a bit repetitive.

At the end of the day I think this game sold bad because it was Ghostbusters a 25 year old franchise brought to video game form from a studio with no AAA titles and it just had to suck, everyone knew this, so why bother checking it out or the reviews beside they where just being nice because it was Ghostbusters. But nothing could be further from the truth if everyone hadn’t convinced themselves this game would suck it could have sold millions on each console because it is a great game that just lacks big budget polish. Now if you like Ghostbusters you will love this game period.

Nice review. I enjoyed the game, but I'm a huge Ghostbusters fan. It certainly had it's flaws, but I had a lot of fun playing through it. Smile
